Today I found myself in the Rambo-Corner again ...
Never heard of the Rambo-Corner ? Could be, it's a phrase I just invented today. But hang-on, let me explain.
The Rambo-Corner is a socially unpleasant position, in which I happen to find myself more often. You can find yourself in the Rambo-Corner before you know it. It happens when you know you haven't been treated a 100% fair, but you know beforehand, that as soon as you raise the issue, your status in the group will change from "likable" to "difficult" and this only because your point of view and opinion is not shared by any of the others in this particular social group. Usually it is about something relatively unimportant, and that is exactly the point. The others think you are exaggerating when you speak up, for them it is even less important, they are not affected.
A Rambo-Corner Example
Say you were silly enough to join a "Co-Working Space", of which your stomach already tried to tell you it is not a 100% fit. Say one of your Co-Workers leaves a huge shelving in the middle of the office ... empty, from day one. But this fact is not even really noticed by the others, your are the only one that after 4 Months starts to wonder why, and it starts to get on your nerves, like for example if you have your customers pass the shelving several times, and you see them wonder "what are those for, they were empty 2 months ago too ... ". You know that as soon as you say something, the others will stare at you thinking you have gone mad and are just spinning in your own little perfect world, and like to exaggerate and look for trouble. Speak up and you will find yourself in the Rambo-Corner. Say nothing and you will feel like a Rambo without balls.
Ah...., sorry ladies, but here I am talking about the proverbial balls, and boy, let me tell you, some women have plenty of that. An artist I used to know, doing wonderful illustrations in the 90ties, must have been the only artist fighting for her (copy) rights as seriously as she did. She found herself in the Rambo-Corner, because she was the only one with that attitude. Other artists were to scared to rock the boat and lose work because of it, but this was a long time ago, let’s hope she paved the way for more fairness in the illustration business.
How to avoid the Rambo-Corner?
Avoid hanging out with people who are prone to put you in the Rambo-Corner in the first place. Not always easy to stick by this rule, but I suppose one needs to develop an instinct for it ...
